Life Between Walls

The original name of this site sprouted while listening to an NPR story, as many ideas do. I don’t even recall the story, but it was about various opposing sides, people who don’t agree with each other and people who don’t understand the other.  It was also about how we place walls between ourselves and other people. We box ourselves in. (I’m paraphrasing somewhat here). We place walls around ourselves and just live within those. We tend not to peer around or over our wall to see what lay beyond. Sometimes we forget to find the common ground that might be between our wall and another person’s wall.

I think we know this in some capacity, but there’s something about the visual of each placing ourselves within our box—inside our individual walls and not trying to break them down or enter into someone else’s walls, into their box, into their mind, into their experience—well, it just felt so tangible. It helped me to see that we need to break out of this way of living, being and thinking. We must strive to live between the walls we build around each other and not only remain within our own walls.  We need to listen to each other and try to understand why I believe what I believe, you feel what you feel, she thinks what she thinks and he does what he does.

Mostly, I’m just writing to think and process all that is unfolding around us, and to better understand people, ideas and experiences. We are living amongst some wild, mad and unpredictable times. So the name of this site may no longer be ‘Life Between Walls,’ but I still write for the same reason—to slowly, hopefully, break down the walls around each of us.
